The legendary Paris
Paris, city of love and culture
At No. 85, in 1949, Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson lived their “amour impossible” there. In 1936, Edward VIII abdicated the throne of England to marry the famous socialite and love of his life. At No. 55, the politician Paul Ménard-Dorian and his wife received and entertained Alphonse Daudet, the Goncourt brothers, Émile Zola, Erik Satie, Auguste Rodin, and many others. This is the story of a painting. Rue de la Faisanderie in autumn was painted in 1885 by Jean-François Raffaëlli, a naturalist impressionist and Edgar Degas’s protégé. His works were highly prized by Americans holidaying in Paris at the turn of the 20th century. Interestingly, the painting was purchased in April 1949 by Frank and Nancy Sinatra, who remain its last known owners.
